By giving interns hands-on experience, students felt more comfortable in official spaces like the Capitol. Simply by walking the halls, students felt that they had the right to be there and speak up for their beliefs. Being taken serious by the power structure felt new, giving them a newfound confidence and self-respect many young people are searching for.
Accessibility
Students were inspired by a diverse group of elected officials. Through conversations, interns realized that our legislators are also citizens with shared interests and passions. Seeing first-hand how bills are developed, negotiated, and passed revealed the inner workings of the government, making the process seem less confusing. Interns became invested in bills’ progress and understood that the State Government is an untapped arena of power.
Amplification
Our interns found their voices through published pieces and in testimony. Having a public and official space to share their ideas was new, but they grew more confident as they gained experience. Along with this, interns gained other professional skills like public speaking and greeting people formally. Students explored different fields within the green economy, helping them discover their interests and find what they want to pursue.
