By giving interns hands on experience, students felt more comfortable in official spaces like the Capitol. Simply by walking the halls, students felt that they had the right to be there and speak up for their beliefs. Being taken serious by the power structure felt new, giving them a newfound confidence and self-respect many young people are searching for.
Accessibility
Students were inspired by a diverse group of elected officials. Through conversations, interns realized that our legislators are normal people with shared interests and passions. Seeing first hand how bills are developed, negotiated, and passed revealed the inner workings of the government, making the processes seem less confusing. Interns became invested in bills’ progress and understood that the State Government is an untapped arena of power.
Amplification
Our interns found their voices through published pieces and in testimony. Having a public and official space to share their ideas was new, but they grew more confident as they gained experience. Along with this, interns gained other professional skills like speaking into a microphone and greeting people formally. We worked on career searching and resume building to give them confidence needed to go into the fields they care most about.
